GLINTS

G L I N T S

'Glints' is an AKA contemporary exhibition featuring paintings by Peter Clossick and sculptures by Cheuk Yiu Lo.

Peter Clossick (b. 1948) is a Fine Artist from London working primarily within oil painting. He was trained at Camberwell School of Art and Goldsmiths College during the early 1970s. He is a member of the New English Art Club and Past president and current member of The London Group - an artist collective established in 1913 .

Cheuk Yiu Lo (b. 1998) is an artist based in Hong Kong and London. She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art with an MFA in Sculpture in 2023 and the Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Visual Arts in 2020.

Clossick is painting figures and faces that are fully absorbed in the process of being contemplated. This mutual observation is absorbing time and filtrating the moment to its pure essence
('Young Jane').

His extensive investigation of the human figure is evident in the way he creates his tactile surfaces - with heavy impasto at times, by carefully considering the distance and angles from which he is overlooking his subjects. This way he is

The intimacy of the subject - often in postures and drawn in a mood one can only allow oneself when being alone
(‘Resting’, ‘Sleeping’).

The artist's eyes penetrate the crystal cover of solitude and, by seeing it as it is, reflect it like a magic mirror.

Seeing is not yet knowing, and painting is a constant pursuit of the secret - the one that created the elements, the creative nature of men, and the ever changing truth of all there is.

‘I am asking a question for which there is no answer. I do not see every Atom of reality, only the shadows on the wall, as in Plato's cave from 400 BC.

Observation is addressing the instinctual eye and not the rationalising mind. The nature of vision is that it will not stay still, it has immediacy over narrative coherence.

We only exist for a brief moment in time, our choices must relate to this existence.'

Peter Clossick

This movement from shadow (not knowing or daring) to light (shaping forms, mixing color, forming an idea) might be a mere glint fleeting as fast as it first appeared. But what matters is its very existence in time and space:

Yes, there is a glowing point

somewhere for us all where

rags and masks will fall.

So that there will never

have been any rags or masks.

There we are eye against eye,

ashes against rain.

Tua Forsström

(Finnish Poet)

There are glints of light and glints of clarity in the process of creating and contemplating the creations of those who seek. That ‘glowing point’ is found within the layers and on the surfaces of both Clossick’s and Lo's work.

The scenes and figures in Cheuk Yiu Lo's sculptures are capturing the play of light and invite for contemplation -weather through narratives that speak about liberation and the divinity of being among others, yet free
('Breaking free'), or through the exploration of an immediate or inherited environments ('Alley kids'), ('Heritage in motion')

There are pieces that evoke the desire for introspection and the need for sacred moments of silence and reflection
('Fishing').

Perhaps everything that appears static abides by the only constant - the principle of movement and change, once allowed a pathway, that stream of consciousness can never be put to rest, even when appearing so
('Nap').

‘While the figure appears peaceful, the stillness belies the dynamic activity occurring beneath the surface. Much like the ocean, the mind during a nap can be a tumultuous place, with dreams and thoughts ebbing and flowing like waves. The serene exterior contrasts with the inner experience, where the sleeper may be wrestling with dreams, ideas, or memories.’
